Rap for the Rat
Glancing through the Winning Post of August 26, I spotted myself together with my partner in the crowd of the “Spot the Changes” photograph taken at the Ballarat All Jumps Racing Day. This prompted me to write to acknowledge a truly outstanding day of racing.
An air of excitement surrounded our arrival. Greetings were exchanged by fellow owners and avid jumps racing fans, an eclectic band of people, united by the one common interest, jumps racing.
Their enthusiasm for the day was unaffected by the presence of a tiny band of protestors, one bellowing through a megaphone, the others chanting in response to his calls.
The meeting was a resounding success. Six hotly contested, high-quality races filled the card, highlighted by the Grand National Steeplechase, which had a truly heart-stopping finish and was courageously won by Wells.
Not surprisingly there was no sign of the protestors when we left the course. It appears that they do not have the same stamina or commitment to their cause as does the mighty Wells.
This day gives hope and promise to the future of jumps racing in Victoria.
