I have been betting on racehorses every day bar Christmas and Good Friday for close to 70 years, and I have a few thoughts on media coverage of the sport.
First, to Sky and its poor coverage of Victorian races. The network is slick when it comes to results for NSW racing — also dogs and trots, with probably less than 20 per cent of the turnover on gallops.
But sometimes I can wait up to half an hour for full dividends on Victorian racing, which in my opinion is far ahead of other states.
As for UBET’s TAB Radio, they need to spend more time on their core business — scratchings and selections.
Some days there is very little form in the papers and I for one don’t want to hear about Saturday’s racing four or five days in advance.
Who knows what the track conditions will be like then, and what’s the point of interviewing owners and trainers? None of them will say their horse can’t win.
An extra hour on the day’s racing form would be much more valuable.
On another topic, I’d like to know who other punters regard as the best tipster. I think Brendan Tupper, the Best Bets tipster who often appears on TAB Radio, has stood the test of time, though I don’t know his winning ratio.
Finally, thanks to Winning Post for its form guide — a great help. If it wasn’t for that I’d probably have to get online without a clue.
