Stylish and tough
Echoing the thoughts of Pittsburgh Phil in his letter “Cotton-wool champ” (11/11), one can understand the need to protect a horse’s record, but gee, haven’t we become soft?
The great colt Stylish Century ran in the Golden Slipper in March of 1989. The just-turned three-year-old then began a 10-run campaign in the San Domenico in August.
That campaign included taking on open-age horses in the George Main, where he finished 2.2 lengths from Vo Rogue, winning the Spring Champion over 2000 metres on a fast track, running second to Almaarad in the Cox Plate, winning the Victoria Derby on another fast track seven days later and, finally, running in the Melbourne Cup three days after that on another rock-hard track.
If that were not enough, he would barely have had a month in the paddock afterwards, because he ran a placing in the William Reid first up in late January of the following year!
