Time for a change

With changes occurring regularly in the world of racing perhaps it’s time to change the way we show race results and dividends on screens — and in the papers.
In the past it was of some use to see the (win) SP of the minor placegetters, to divide the odds by four and see how the tote dividend compared with the SP dividend.
That system for calculating place odds has gone out the window, with bookies offering separate odds for the place that have little or no relationship to the win odds.
The fixed-odds column already shows the fixed-odds place divvies. The win odds are now irrelevant for second and third, once the race is over.
What we need is the win SP for the winner and place SPs for the placegetters, for comparison purposes. Historians and racing purists can still have the win SP recorded against a horse’s form. But straight after a race and in the next day’s newspaper results we need to show the numbers that better reflect the reality of today’s racing.
Punters will quickly get used to it.
