Gas mark

Further to Paul Richards’s interesting column on landmarks at racecourses (3/3).
In the late 1960s natural gas replaced gas produced from coal in South Australia and the need for the gas storage tanks called gasometers ceased.
There was a huge gasometer across the road from Morphettville racecourse.
The late Bert Day regularly included it in his call and listeners off course knew there was about 900 metres to go when when they heard, “… as they go past the gasometer”.
