Letter of the Week

Change the date

The first day of Oakbank’s new split jumps carnival, as usual, saw strong, near-capacity fields. Backing up on the second day had always been the problem, but no longer.
On the other hand, not sure Victorian trainers (or travelling punters) will enjoy making the long trip twice.
Spreading the major jumps races is an improvement, but the program could be even better.
Thoroughbred Racing SA could switch last Sunday’s Oakbank date, with Port Lincoln’s Sunday-before-Easter date.
Interstaters would then have the option of staying the week and sampling local wineries and sights, instead of making two trips or having to choose which weekend to attend.
With a new government, I sense the resurgence of South Australia, and SA racing.
A one-week Sunday-Saturday-Monday Oakbank carnival could return it to its former glory, and then some.
