Letter of the Week

Torpedoed by sub

Further to Pittsburgh Phil’s letter on daily doubles (5/5), after the merger of the Victorian and NSW TABs we in NSW inherited the horrendous rules  where if your horse is scratched you are allotted the substitute.
I like to take a specific jockey/horse combination with the field in doubles, and when my horse is scratched I want my money refunded.
For example, in Queensland last month I took the field into Amanaat and Amanaat into the field in running doubles, as well as Amanaat into the field in a daily double. All moneys lost.
The original ruling in NSW was that a first-leg scratching would bring a refund, while a second-leg scratching would attract a special dividend. This is way fairer.
In New Zealand they also had a concession result if your second leg ran second.
I was so frustrated with this ruling that I did not place doubles the following Saturday, consequently missing out on a $41 dividend for the field with Miss Iano, which would have been another $500 on top of my each-way return.
And don’t start telling me how I should bet in another format. I’ve been working in the industry for 52 years and my system is following particular jockeys when riding for particular stables.
