Don't cook goose

Point-of-consumption taxes terrify me, with the future of Aussie racing and sports possibly on the line.
If it claws a bit back from underpaying corporates, yet doesn’t make punting unviable again (as it was last century with the TAB monopoly), all well and good.
But what if big punters are forced truly offshore, to bookies and exchanges that pay zero fees to Aussie racing or governments?
If pro punters can’t win, they’ll look elsewhere. There’s plenty of glamorous low-fee product to bet on overseas.
After 18 years of competition, and reasonable takeouts, it’s a fantasy to think they’ll return to our TABs’ 17 per cent.
Choke the golden goose too hard, and it may fly away, never to return.
