Man for all seasons
Racing lost a great character with the passing of Victorian bookmaker Eric Tymms.
Eric made the most of a life whose formative years were spent in times of depression and war.
He always managed to keep a bright, meaningful, caring attitude towards life and his fellow human being.
His contribution to racing was enormous through his bookmaking role and his personal interest in every area of racing.
He was instrumental in inaugurating Melbourne’s first racing mass, at St Francis’s church in the city over 50 years ago.
This became an annual event attended by hundreds of the racing fraternity.
The annual racing reflection day at Glen Waverley was also due to Eric’s efforts.
All this was done with his usual great enthusiasm.
The racing world (and the wider world) is a better place due to Eric crossing our paths.
