Goliath felled
I must admit I hollered with joy when Red Alto won the Cindy Sullivan Handicap on August 11 in Sydney, defeating Chis Waller’s cavalry.
It was such wonderful judgement from trainer Brent Stanley and a great ride from Tye Angland, who would normally be part of that cavalry.
I think that win should give other trainers the confidence to take on the Waller juggernaut.
On a related topic, I find it hard to fathom how a trainer with multiple runners in a race — often including more than one owned in the same interests — can be expected to formulate tactics that give each runner its maximum chance.
I just think that having so many runners in a race from one stable is not a good look for Sydney racing — and I am certainly not disparaging the champion trainer.
My hero as a youngster was Tommy Smith and he used to dominate in the same fashion, though not on the same scale.
