Win, not War

I love Winning Post and read it from cover to cover including the international report. So it was annoying to see Sha Tin’s QEII Cup winner referred to as “War Bright” throughout the report.
The horse is Win Bright, owned by the Japanese Win Co Ltd. I’ll blame Wathen-Berry’s spellcheck system.
Speaking of names, how did the Gippsland town of Koo Wee Rup (derived from Bunurong language for “blackfish swimming”) give its name to promising filly Kooweerup? Nothing in her breeding or ownership suggests it.
My mother and her siblings grew up in that town in the early 1900s. It was swamp land drained for farming and when it wasn’t feeding dairy cows or growing vegetable for the Melbourne market, it was severely flooded by heavy rains filling the drains and breaking the levees.
It seems a curious choice for a well bred and very expensive thoroughbred.
Historically there were riding enthusiasts among the property owners in those pioneering years — they had a hunt club!
I wonder if the owner, Mrs Zhang, has connections there?
Finally, thanks for all the tips, especially the anagram tip for Olympic Academy!
