Move the Adelaide Cup
Now that Oakbank has bitten the bullet and abandoned over 60 years of tradition to try something new, I feel it’s time the SAJC did the same with the Adelaide Cup. By all means move the race from March to May, but the public holiday will have to go.
Holding our premier two-mile race on Goodwood day makes much more sense, as it will consolidate our carnival into one month.
The March public-holiday date currently occupied by the Adelaide Cup could be used for a new raceday themed around the Adelaide Festival of the Arts and the Fringe.
On the subject of race programs, it’s high time that race times, gaps between races and races per card were looked at on a national level.
If nght and twilight racing are the future, as John Tutty (21/12) suggests, the nine-race cards currently the norm in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane will have to be reviewed, as will Saturday provincial racing.
