Classic switch?
I think the discussion on spring carnival dates in Melbourne was too rigid in that it appeared to focus upon the total transfer of existing club programs, rather than looking at the detail of each of the MRC and VRC carnivals.
There is no doubt that Victoria’s two premier three-year-old events, the Caulfield Guineas and Victoria Derby, are held way too early in the season.
Many of us don’t like to run our horses as two-year-olds, and to have these races so early in the three-year-old year means that many good horses are simply not ready, with the result that the fields are often average at best.
Why wouldn’t both clubs look to leave their all-aged premier races in their current position and run a joint club mini-carnival a few months later for age-restricted races.
This would spread the interest for patrons and provide an unrushed opportunity for our horses.
