If further evidence were needed that race club committees have no business picking fields for major races, I present last week’s Cox Plate.
Buckhurst is no superstar but he was at least a three-time Group 3 winner.
And in one of those Group 3 wins he’d beaten the eventual Cox Plate winner over the Cox Plate distance.
But the committee in its wisdom opted instead for a three-year-old whose only win had come in a juvenile benchmark 66 in Adelaide.
Happily, with the scratching, we were able to test the proposition that the wrong decision had been made.
It turned out neither was competitive, but Buckhurst beat Grandslam home by five lengths, which is more or less exactly what might have been expected.
