C.S. deserves better
Black Caviar Lightning day saw the time-honoured Group 1 sprint backed up by two Group 3s, a listed race,
a plate, three trophy races and two BM84s. Not a strong support card for such a great race.
The presence of the C.S. Hayes Stakes got me wondering, as I do on a yearly basis, why one of the three greatest trainers in Australian racing history only has a Group 3 named after him.
T.J. Smith has a Group 1 race run in his honour while The Bart Cummings is only a Group 3 but does provide a golden ticket into the great race with which Bart’s name is synonymous.
Given what Colin Hayes did for Australian racing, he deserves to be honoured at the highest level.
Why not let last Saturday’s race go back to being The Debonair and rebrand Saturday week’s grand final as the C.S. Hayes Guineas?
It would be a fitting tribute given he trained three of the first five winners of the race, including the great Zabeel.
