A different vibe
I was very sceptical about the introduction of “pop-up” races, but after attending my first All-Star Mile at The Valley last Saturday I have certainly come around to the idea.
There was a really fun atmosphere around the track and the spectators appeared to be genuinely invested in the different runners. Whether or not this was because of the voting system or the additional promotions I’m not sure, but as they came out on to the track many of the runners received large cheers from sections of the crowd (even the longshots).
Then after the race was run, the biggest applause I noticed was not for the winner, Mugatoo, but for The Harrovian, who had finished a gallant fifth.
For these reasons, the All Star Mile felt unlike any other race day I had attended and I for one hope that Racing Victoria persists with this concept.
