There's a war on
Interesting that John Glover (14/8) should point to Anzac Day and the sacrifices of the Diggers to justify his view that vaccine refuseniks should be allowed to enjoy a day at the races.
As they used to say in wartime, “There’s a war on, you know.” All sorts of freedoms were curtailed (temporarily) in Australia during World War Two, and rightly so. The civilian population as well as the soldiery made sacrifices.
Mr Glover may not have noticed, but there’s a war on right now. It’s not business as usual. The coronavirus pandemic is undoubtedly the gravest public-health and economic crisis to have faced Australia since 1945, and certain freedoms will have to be sacrificed in the short term or it’s a war we will lose.
No one is going to hold Mr Glover down and force a vaccine in his arm, but unless we want rolling lockdowns until herd immunity is achieved (which may be never, thanks to anti-vaxxers and government ineptitude), those who make the choice not to be vaccinated will need to be excluded from some public events.
This should be neither divisive nor controversial.
