Good old Ted
That morning where Ted Byrne did not like his mount (Richo, 28/8) was the same morning Roy Higgins said the same about a horse called Tattenham (I’m pretty sure that was the name — it was a long time ago), which also blew like the north wind and won. It caused a massive furore.
The VRC stewards, I believe led at the time by Jim Ahern, were quick to institute the “no tipping” rule thereafter.
Further on the subject of Ted Byrne, one of my mates used to ride trackwork over the jumps and he would sometimes see Ted singing or smoking a cigar (though not at the same time) as he went around.
There was also a World of Sport appearance when he was eating a pie and they switched to him without warning. Someone (probably Lou Richards) yelled, “Put it in your pocket!” which Ted duly did, inserting the remains of the piping-hot comestible into his duffle coat.
A true character.
