Selective ethics

Lawrence Pope (More Say 2/1) speaks of "the trajectory of history" perhaps not realising that cross-country racing originated in Ireland in 1752.

From that time the sport has withstood criticism from various writers and newspapers and will continue to do so despite the efforts of self-appointed guadians of animal welfare. The history of racing cannot be presented in a vacuum as Pope would have it.

Pope refers to the newspaper coverage and the public being "shocked by the images they have seen". Were newspapers to carry images from knackeries and abattoirs, Pope’s city-dwelling unemployed may well be alerted to a few basic realities.

Apparently Pope’s targets for protesting are decided upon the basis of his friendships. As he has friends in showjumping he will not encourage his tribe to protest against this sport, but as he doesn’t have any friends in eventing or rodeos these are fair game.

Pope claims "reform always brings resistance". His views do not seek reform, however, but abolition.
