What's the story?
One wonders where Patrick Bartley got the information for his story on the Danny Nikolic investigation in The Age of February 23.
"The inquiry follows Betfair’s investigators, after careful monitoring of accounts, alerting stewards around Australia to a series of abnormal transactions," Bartley wrote.
"It’s understood that these isolated betting accounts revealed significant spikes on certain races with ‘multiple changes’ in the value of the bets."
If the source was someone at Betfair, fair enough. One certainly hopes no one on or close to the stewards panel would release such prejudicial material while an investigation continued.
It seems probable to me that Nikolic will not even be charged, let alone found guilty.
If he is cleared, his reputation will have suffered needlessly and unfairly from the release of this material.
