Letter of the Week

Who's counting?

Fair crack of the whip! Since the padded item was introduced to prevent horses being hurt, racing stewards have had a ball suspending or fining jockeys for hitting their steeds a couple of times more than allowed by the new rules.

Fair dinkum, blokes, if the whips have been modified to the extent they are just "feather dusters," why not cease the counting and let the riders use their own judgment?

Stewards could then keep their eyes peeled for interference and other wrongs in races. Otherwise, ban the whips altogether and we can enjoy the skill of hands-and-heels riding.
