Do we need to know?
The considered assessment of the Danny Nikolic case from ever-pompous Australian columnist Patrick Smith is: "He needs to hand over his phone and (jockeys association chief Des) O’Keeffe needs to shut up."
If I had a choice between two people shutting up — a bloke who’s spent most of his working life assisting jockeys and a bloke who puts on a silly hat and goes to six meetings a year when the other 15 sports in which he’s an "expert" shut down — I know which I’d choose.
Smith waffles on: "What has happened to Nikolic happens all the time in the community. Authorities inspect circumstances that are not quite clear, be it in business or sport."
But do these authorities conduct their inspections by press release? And are snippets of the evidence they collect routinely published in newspapers?
"The stewards have disseminated only the amount of information required to keep the community aware that an investigation was under way."
Why does the community need to be aware that an investigation is under way? Can we now look forward to regular updates from the drug squad on whom they are targeting and why?
