SA: Daz, Haz go out with a bang
By Peter Neall, July 28, 2015 - 1:14 PM

Premier Victorian trainer Darren Weir farewelled the old season in the style he knows best when he landed a treble at Morphettville last Saturday.
Apprentice Harry Coffey rode all three of Weir’s winners.
Weir opened his account when the former Queenslander Try Four came from midfield to take out the benchmark 82 Schweppes Handicap (2035m).
The Weir/Coffey juggernaut rolled on when Conwell came from last to bring up her second win in a row (at her third start) in the Mittys Handicap for three-year-olds over 1600 metres.
The Victorians completed a good day’s work when Stylish Miss picked up the benchmark 90 James Boag’s Handicap (1600m).
Rain forecast for Coast
Wild Rain finished her three-year-old season in great style when she gave trainer Mark Kavanagh and jockey Matt Neilson victory in the listed Lightning Stakes (1050m), the feature on the Morphettville program.
Now with five wins from 12 starts, Wild Rain will be spelled ahead of a preparation aimed at the rich Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Quality on the Gold Coast in January, according to stable spokesman Levi Kavanagh.
Gunpowder goes off
Phillip Stokes wrapped up the Adelaide metropolitan trainers’ title when his exciting charge Miss Gunpowder made it two wins from two starts in the Irish Day 29th August Handicap (1100m), for two-year-olds at 0-68 level.
Steered by stable apprentice Emily Finnegan, Miss Gunpowder was well placed throughout.
Stokes said he’d thought of running Miss Gunpowder in the listed Morphettville Guineas (1600m) on September 12 but would now reserve her for higher-class fillies races in the Melbourne spring.
Stokes must have been impressed by what he saw of Miss Gunpowder early as he bought her half-sister by So You Think for $200,000 at this year’s Inglis Easter yearling sale.
The win of Miss Gunpowder heralded a big weekend for Stokes as he joined forces with Dom Tourneur, fresh back from injury, for a double at Gawler on Sunday.
Their winners were the first-starter Colonel Custer and Lucksa.
Shaun shines
Shaun Guymer landed his first SA winner since joining the Angaston stable of Tony McEvoy when he guided Amiconi Originale to a win in the benchmark 72 Betty Wright Handicap (1100m) at Morphettville.
Whitlam maintains rage
Last September’s listed Wylie Handicap winner, Whitlam, has more black type in his sights after returning to racing a winner at the Morphettville meeting.
Whitlam came with a strong run up the middle of the track under Shayne Cahill to give trainer Danielle Wilson a win in the Drink Driving? Grow Up Handicap (1100m).
A pleased Wilson said afterwards she would now set Whitlam for the Group 3 David R. Coles AM Spring Stakes (1200m) on Saturday week.
Jake jaunt
Apprentice Jake Toeroek will be missing from the SA riding ranks for the next fortnight. He headed earlier this week to Singapore, where he will ride at four meetings as part of his prize as dux of the SA Apprentice Academy last year.
All roads to Roxby
The Roxby Downs Racing Club will stage its annual non-TAB cup meeting on Saturday. The 1800-metre Roxby Downs Cup will be the final leg of the Outback Cups Championship.
