Wimmera: Magnapal takes it to another level
By Josh Mackay, September 1, 2015 - 11:43 AM

Stawell training partners Terry and Karina O’Sullivan capped a successful winter with black-type glory at Caulfield last Saturday, the final Melbourne metro meeting of August.
The O’Sullivans’ more-than-handy galloper Magnapal had opened his campaign with a midweek victory at Sandown but the six-year-old took it to another level second up in the listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m).
Luke Currie placed Magnapal in the gun spot just behind the leaders, enjoying a nice run in transit. An astute ride from Currie saw Magnapal stick to the rail, launching a strong run once into the straight.
The son of Magnus proved too good for the fast-finishing Iggimacool, winning by 1½ lengths.
The win was Magnapal’s sixth from 35 starts, for stake earnings of $254,355.
Head for the Hills
This Sunday sees the running of the time-honoured Sheep Hills Cup at Warracknabeal over 1815m.
The Sheep Hills Cup has always been a keenly contested event and usually attracts a handy field. In 2013, for example, cup winner Mujadale went on to win at Caulfield and Flemington in his next four starts. He return last spring to win the Ararat and Ballarat cups.
The day is always supported strongly by Melbourne stables, with leading Victorian trainer Darren Weir and the top Wimmera team of Terry and Karina O’Sullivan also likely to have solid representation on the day.
