SA: Macca's Markou stars on debut
By Peter Neall, October 6, 2015 - 1:12 PM

Trainer Tony McEvoy may have a good juvenile and a nice horse for the future in his care after Mr Markou gave him the first leg of a double on the Parks track at Morphettville last Saturday.
Purchased for $165,000 at a Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale by Wayne Mitchell’s Pipeliner Bloodstock, the Stryker gelding came from a rearward position under Jason Holder to score a 1¾-length win in the Campolina Stud Plate (1000m).
Holder’s day took a turn for the worse after the following race when he copped a four-meeting suspension for carelss riding. He’ll be out from midnight on Saturday to midnight the following Saturday.
McEvoy completed his double when he joined forces with apprentice Zac Spain in the all-the-way win of Frost Dodger in the benchmark 70 James Boag’s Premium Handicap (1950m).
It was Spain’s first Saturday winner at Morphettville and followed a double at Mount Gambier three days earlier.
Injured Dom bounces back
Dom Tourneur kicked off a double of his own when the Clinton McDonald-trained Stormy Bill led all the way to take out the benchmark 82 Akeed Mofeed at Goldin Farms Handicap (2400m).
Tourneur stood himself down two races later because of a hip strain  but bounced back to complete his double in the following race, bringing the Gordon Richards-trained Beau Rivage from better than midfield to take out Melbourne Cup Live @ Morphettville Handicap for three-year-olds over 1250 metres.
Beau Rivage is likely to have two more runs in Adelaide before he tackles a three-year-old race on the final day of the Flemington spring carnival.
In other stable news, Richards will farewell one of his stable stars, Belfast Boy, this Saturday.
The eight-year-old will end his racing career with his 80th start.  Belfast Boy has won nine races, three at Flemington, and amassed prizemoney of $440,070.
Joy for Jemma
Jemma Frew resumed riding following a three-year break in good style last Saturday, partnering the Nicole Bruggermann-trained Little Audrey to a win in the Jamestown Cup (1800m) last Saturday.
Frew, a mother of two and wife of fellow jockey Jordan, followed up her success with a win on Shiso for her in-laws, Heather and Kevin Frew, at the opening meeting of the Port Lincoln season on Sunday.
Poon in tune early
Hong Kong apprentice Matthew Poon, currently on a stint with the SA Apprentice Academy, landed his first SA winner with his first ride in the state on Sutanoc at Jamestown last Saturday.
Doubles all round
Local co-trainers Wayne Francis and Glen Kent led the training assault at Strathalbyn on Monday with a double. Their winners were Silent Sniper and Patch Hero, both ridden by Jamie Kah.
Paul Gatt also doubled up, winning successive races on Optimize and Streetcar Valour.
