SA: Weir has Howard in classic form
By Peter Neall, May 3, 2016 - 8:09 AM

Master trainer Darren Weir again stole the show at Morphettville Parks last Saturday, winning three races including two of the four stakes events.
Brad Rawiller rode both Weir’s black-type winners, the first of whom was Rageese ($1.85 favourite), who came with a strong run over the concluding stages to record a convincing 4¼-length win in the listed H.C. Nitschke Stakes (1400m).
Weir and Rawiller completed their feature double when Howard Be Thy Name won the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2020m), which was run on the main track.
Howard Be Thy Name ($2.50 favourite) came from a midfield position with a strong run in the straight to bring up his second Adelaide feature win in a fortnight, following his Port Adelaide Guineas success on April 16.
The Redoute’s Choice colt, narrowly beaten by local stayer Jerilderie Letter in February’s Tasmanian Derby, must be considered a strong contender for the Group 1 UBET SA Derby (2500m) on May 14.
Earlier, Weir brought up the first leg of his treble when Rich River ($2.60 favourite) took out the Where’s Lewy Grantham Handicap, a benchmark 90 over 2400 metres.
Rich River was the first of two winners for jockey Harry Coffey, who later scored on Zebulon ($5.50) for Whittlesea trainers Peter Morgan and Craig Widdison in the listed Holdfast Insurance City of Adelaide Handicap (1400m).
Having just his second start after a 15-month layoff due to a leg injury, Zebulon came from a midfield position with a strong run from the home turn.
Widdison indicated Zebulon might be back for the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) on May 21.
Joy for Jess
It was a clean sweep for Victorian stables in the black-type events last Saturday, as Caulfield-based John Moloney produced Flying Jess ($7) to win the UBET Sires’ Produce Stakes over 1400 metres.
With apprentice Jordan Childs aboard, Flying Jess came with a strong run to break her maiden status at her fifth start.
Thomas too good
Jockey Dom Tourneur and Naracoorte trainer Sue Murphy took the honours at Penola on Sunday with two winners apiece including Hasta La Thomas in the Millicent Cup (2100m).
Murphy trained the previous winner, Back on Track, while Tourneur won earlier on Subject to Change for Chris Oxlade.
Angela rules Alice
Congratulations to Port Lincoln trainer Angela Forster and jockey Carl Spry on the win of Montalto in Monday’s Alice Springs Cup (2000m).
