Holder's only just hanging on

After serving two suspensions for careless riding Matthew Neilson put the heat back on Jason Holder in the race for the Adelaide jockeys title with a double on the Parks track at Morphettville last Saturday.
Neilson is now on 47 wins, two behind Holder. Neilson’s winners were provided by the Morphettville stable of David Hayes and Tom Dabernig.
The first came when the last-start Geelong winner Zunbaqa came from around midfield to register her second win from three appearances. She  took the two-year-old benchmark 64 handicap over 1300 metres.
Neilson scored the second leg of his double when the well placed Super Fun recorded his third win in succession in the Benchmark 82 handicap of 1000 metres.
Welcome win
It was good to see Ben Claridge back among the list of winning hoops last Saturday. He joined with Robbie Laing in the victory of Subiaso in the 1950-metre Benchmark 82 race.
Having his first ride since August 8 last year due to a serious shoulder injury, Claridge had Subiaso well positioned throughout the event.
Subiaso is likely to stay in Adelaide under the care of Chris Bieg, who said connections of the Testa Rossa gelding are hopeful the horse will get his jumping ticket in the near future.
Claridge, who has had more than his share of injuries over the last 10  years, followed his Morphettville success with a win on the Paula Trenwith-trained Impressive Yield at Port Augusta on Sunday.
Showpero’ smart ...
Jason Holder took his tally of city winners for the season to 49 when he won on David Jolly’s Showpero, who made it successive victories.
Showpero, a convincing winner in each of her two starts, will be among the acceptors for the highly anticipated $100,000 UBET Lightning Stakes for two- and three-year-olds at set weights over 1050 metres on July 29.
... so is Ashero
Trainer Gordon Richards was all smiles after the winning performances of his two-year-old Ashero in the maiden race over 1000 metres.
Well handled by apprentice Ryan Hurdle and coming from a midfield position to record his first win from two starts, Ashero is also likely to run in the Lightning.
Impressive finish
Combining with trainer Tony McEvoy, Melbourne rider Damien Thornton joined the winning hoops parade when Ascendance came from last to win over 1000 metres.
Another winning rider was Emily Finnegan, who scored aboard Victory Downs for Naracoorte-based horsewomen Sue Jaensch, over 1400m.
Three for Potter
Justin Potter nabbed a treble and Brandon Griffiths a double at last Sunday’s Port Augusta Cup meeting.
The first leg of Potter’s treble came by way of the Rodney Irons-trained Rugged Angel, and his second was on the Darren Magro-trained Kooma Blaze.
Potter completed a good day’s work when he teamed with Alice Springs trainer Lisa Lefoe with New Empire in the City Of Port Augusta Cup.
Griffiths won on the Garret Lynch-prepared Edge Of Chaos and the Kylie Mckerlie-trained Triumphant One.
