SA: Rocket fires partners to stakes glory
By Peter Neall, August 23, 2016 - 10:00 AM

Jamie Kah is off to a solid start in her bid for a second Adelaide jockeys premiership, with a double at Morphettville Parks last Saturday taking her to an early lead.
Kah (pictured), who won the title as an apprentice in 2012/13 with 41 winners, has four Adelaide winners for the new season, one clear of apprentice Matthew Poon, who also rode a double last Saturday.
Both Kah’s winners last Saturday were provided by the training partnership of Wayne Francis and Glen Kent.
The first was Lope de Capio ($1.90 favourite), who was handy throughout and proved too strong in the benchmark 75 Guardian Insurance Brokers Handicap (1000m).
The trio were again in the winner’s circle after the listed weight-for-age UBET Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) with five-year-old Court Command mare Rocket Commander ($6.50).
A $3500 purchase by Francis and Kent at the 2013 Adelaide Magic Millions yearling sale, Rocket Commander is the first black-type winner for the team. She has earned $249,460 from 32 starts.
She will have her last race in next Wednesday’s listed $100,000 Balaklava Cup (1600m) before going to stud in New South Wales.
Poon brought up the first leg of his double last Saturday when Sandhill Warrior ($7) won the benchmark 75 Daken and Daken Real Estate Handicap (1550m).
Sandhill Warrior is another likely starter in the Balaklava Cup.
A race later, Poon brought up his second winner on the Nick Smart-trained Mr Liberty ($4.40) in the benchmark 64 Akeed Mofeed @ Goldin Farms Handicap (1250m), a leg of the National Jockeys Trust series.
Ryan’s flying
Sharing the riding honours with Kah and Poon at the Parks meeting was Ryan Hurdle, who rode the first and last winners.
Hurdle brought up the first leg of his bookend double when the Gordon Richards-trained Benz took out the three-year-old benchmark 70 M&J Willis Australian Opal Mines Handicap (1000m).
Benz was racing as a three-year-old for the first time, having recorded two wins from three starts at two.
Benz ($12) ran on from midfield to score by a length and Richards remains hopeful of a start in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 8.
Later, Hurdle joined forces with another local horseman in Daryl Stone to win the benchmark 64 Better Loosen Up Memorial Handicap (1400m) on Force of Three ($16).
An interesting sidelight to that last race was the run of Owl On the Prowl, whose rider, Jordan Frew, became the first SA jockey to take advantage of the dual jockey/trainer licence introduced this season. The $6 chance finished 10th.
