Wimmera: Oldies a hit
By Josh Mackay, October 25, 2016 - 10:08 AM

Stawell trainers Terry and Karina O’Sullivan have added the 2016 St Arnaud Cup (2000m) to their trophy cabinet courtesy of Golden Oldies.
With stable apprentice Jessica Eaton in the saddle last Saturday, Golden Oldies ($4.80) was allowed to roll straight to the lead in the $20,000 feature, freewheeling out in front.
The Soldier’s Tale gelding was challenged mid-race by Caves, and the pair soon burst away from the rest of the field.
Balanced for the run home, Golden Oldies beat off Caves and dashed away to score by 4½ lengths.
The win was Golden Oldies’ first since June 2015 at Flemington — an injury setback that sidelined the horse for twelve months.
Overall he’s had 18 starts for five wins and $139,310.
Focus flies
Horsham trainer Paul Preusker extended his good recent run at the St Arnaud meeting with restricted-class sprinter Lotza Focus ($5.50) in a benchmark 64 over 1100 metres.
Despite being forced to race wide for most of the race, the son of Strategic Maneuver travelled strongly for jockey Jake Duffy.
Once in the straight, the four-year-old gelding dashed clear to score by a half length.
Lotza Focus has built a handy record of six starts for two wins and one second, with earnings of $21,865.
Consol chasing second cup
Magic Consol, the Horsham Cup winner of 2015, will be looking to go back-to-back at his home track this Friday.
The Paul Preusker-trained Magic Consol was dominant in last year’s race, accounting for Harveys True Heart with ease.
The Consolidator gelding’s recent form has been excellent, finishing close up in stronger races in the city. He looks well suited to the 1800 metres and a drop in class.
For racegoers, Friday’s twilight meeting will be jam-packed with fun, with the first event around 2pm and the last at 6.15pm.
The Horsham and District Racing Club is offering a two-for-one deal on tickets for the Texan Warney Marquee ($150), while Fashions on the Field is sponsored by Priceline Pharmacy, and there are loads of kids activities courtesy of Kelly Sports.
