SA: Demolition derby caps juniors' day
By Peter Neall, January 17, 2017 - 10:13 AM

While the bizarre actions of Josh Cartwright in the last race dominated the headlines from Morphettville Parks last Saturday, the controversial win of Cartwright’s girlfriend, Anna Jordsjo, on $4 favourite Murti completed a big day for the SA Apprentice Academy.
Academy students took out five of the eight races, with a double to Emily Finnegan and winners to Matthew Poon and Eran Boyd before Cartwright ensured Jordsjo’s all-the-way victory by causing severe interference to two challengers, resulting in a charge of reckless riding.
Finnegan landed the first leg of her running double on Have Another Glass ($4.40), trained by Sue Jaensch at Naracoorte.
The Domesday mare missed the start before settling in last position, unleashing a strong run from the top of the straight to take out the benchmark 64 Quayclean Handicap (1400m).
A relieved Jaensch said she had accepted with the mare twice previously at Morphettville but then scratched her as the owners didn’t consider Have Another Glass good enough for city company.
Teaming with her master, Phillip Stokes, Finnegan completed her double when Finke ($5.50) worked himself from a midfield position to take out the benchmark 82 Holdfast Insurance Handicap (1550m).
Earlier, Poon kept up his surge toward the top of the Adelaide jockeys list when he guided the Richard Jolly-trained Pluck filly Harlem Child ($7.50) from midfield to break through at her fifth start, Schweppes Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate (1000m).
The win completed a double for Jolly, as Karacatis ($9) earlier scored a first-up win over 1000 metres.
Boyd’s win came aboard Beautiful Flyer, who brought up her second consecutive Parks track win in the benchmark 75 John “Arkwright” Edwards 90th Handicap (1250m).
Beautiful Flyer, who started a $1.70 favourite, is prepared at Murray Bridge by Len Jarvis, who had his heart in his mouth after the four-year-old missed the start.
The Solo Flyer mare quickly worked herself through the field to record a head victory.
Jarvis said afterwards he would give Beautiful Flyer a short let-up before she building her up slowly to an Adelaide autumn campaign that may take in the UBET Robert Sangster Stakes for fillies and mares on May 6 and the Goodwood on May 20, both $1 million Group 1 races over the Morphettville 1200 metres.
Hux hot
Justin Huxtable was another apprentice to shine over the weekend, landing six winners — four at the non-TAB meeting at Ceduna on Saturday and a double at Sunday’s Strathalbyn Cup fixture.
Fury fires
Speaking of the Strath Cup, congratulations to local trainer Shane Oxlade and hoop Justin Potter on taking the main event with Ustinov’s Fury, who led throughout the 2050-metre feature.
Shep shines
Morphettville trainer Dan Shepherd and hoop Dom Tourneur took the honours at last Thursday’s Penola meeting with a treble apiece.
They combined for two of their winners including That’s a Slab ($9), who came from midfield to take out the feature Coonawarra Vignerons Cup (1700m).
