Central Victoria: Joy for George as Lord swoops
By Paul Egan, February 21, 2017 - 10:55 AM

The George Osborne-trained Lordfontein ($3.40 favourite) carried the flag for the locals at Kyneton & Hanging Rock Racing Club’s eight-race card on Monday.
The five-year-old Turffontein gelding, ridden by Linda Meech, was a narrow winner of the Thank You Gary Buckley CG&E BM58 Handicap (1450m).
The gelding, coming from the rear of the field, got up to deprive newly licensed trainer Jackie Beriman of her first winner with Goldclip ($3.80). The locally trained Luck’s a Turning ($21) was third.
Lordfontein, part-owned by Osborne, now has four wins and four placings from 22 starts.
Punters had a good day, with five favourites winning on the program, on a day that the club honoured a true gentleman in former long-time K&HRRC secretary Gary Buckley.
Cosmic cracker
Seymour trainer Murray Johnson had Cosmic Song cherry ripe for a first-up win at Tatura last Friday.
The Astronomer Royal four-year old gelding was a comfortable winner of the Ratcliffe’s Garden Machinery BM58 Handicap (1100m).
The second leg of a riding double for John Keating, Cosmic Song ($5.50) defeated the Tahlia Hope mount Downing Street ($3.40) by 1¼ lengths with Pacific Tycoon ($4.80) third.
It was the gelding’s first run since October last year, and he has now won three races from his past four starts.
Overall he’s had nine starts for those three wins and two minor placings.
Meanwhile, Johnson’s stable star Pure Pride has her hoof on the till after a slashing first-up run over 1400 metres at Flemington last Saturday.
Beach bingo
Kyneton trainer and district clerk of course Bob Challis was successful again with Haukland Beach ($6.50 equal favourite) at Sportsbet-Ballarat on Sunday.
The Road to Rock four-year-old mare made it three wins from her past five starts in taking out the $23,000 Hygain BM64 Handicap (1600m).
The mare was ridden back in the field by Jarrod Fry and sprouted wings in the straight to defeat Pria Eclipse ($7) by 1¼ lengths with Lola De Oro ($20) third.
Part-owned by long-time stable client Ralph Portaro, the mare has now won three races with three minor placings from only 10 starts.
