Picnics: Kilgowers make up for lost time
By Conor Ryan, February 21, 2017 - 3:45 PM

Troy and John Kilgower enjoyed some overdue success at Buchan last Saturday.
The father-son training tandem haven’t had much luck on the picnic circuit this season, but took a treble of wins home to their Sale base on the weekend.
The Kilgowers saluted in the odd-numbered races on the card, with Rampaging Jackson taking out the first of the day.
Calmalist made it a double in race three, before Bemarydan stormed home to win the fifth by 5¾ lengths.
Troy Kilgower said it was nice to get some reward for their hard work.
“We got off to a bit of a slow start this season, so it was good to win a few,” he said.
“Hopefully we can come home a bit stronger in the second half of the season.
“There’s not really any reason for it. We thought we had a good little team there at the start.
“Things just hadn’t gone our way.”
The three wins just about doubled the Kilgowers’ win tally for the season, and came as a boost for regular stable jockey Grant Seccombe.
Seccombe told Winning Post earlier this month he was in fine form, and he walked the walk on Saturday (rode the ride?), steering all three Kilgower horses to victory.
Despite the slow start to this season, Troy said he was excited about the near future.
“We’ve got plenty of young ones coming through,” he said.
“We’ve got a few owners in some, we’ve bred a few and we’ve bought a few. There’ll be a few stepping through shortly, within the next month or so.
“We’ve got a Danerich that goes all right and an Exceed And Excel, we don’t mind him. He’s going pretty well.”
Though it was a successful trip into the high country, the Kilgowers didn’t take home the day’s biggest prize, the Buchan Station, Buchan Caves, Buchan Pub Buchan Cup.
This was not unexpected; they didn’t have a runner.
The cup went to another Sale trainer, Cliff Murray, and his mare Bolshoi Belle.
Reece Goodwin had the winning ride in the cup, which might have made his roughly 11-hour round trip from Seymour worthwhile.
The picnics return to Yea this Sunday for the annual Yea St Pat’s Cup.
