SA: Weir filly looks Oaks benchmark
By Peter Neall, April 24, 2017 - 3:17 PM

Darren Weir looks to have a great chance of landing the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks for a second time after Kenedna gave him and jockey John Allen the second leg of a double at Morphettville last Saturday.
Bringing up her second Adelaide feature victory in a fortnight, Kenedna threw down the gauntlet to her Oaks rivals, who will need to step up a notch to beat her in the main event.
Kenedna started the $2.70 punters’ choice in last Saturday’s Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) after $4.20 was bet about her early.
Allen settled her in the back half of the field before gradually improving then breaking clear for a dominant 1¾-length win.
Allen was aboard for Kenedna’s win in the listed Laelia Stakes a fortnight earlier and will hope he has done enough on the filly to convince her connections to let him ride her again in the $500,000 Schweppes Oaks.
Brad Rawiller rode the Weir-trained May’s Dream to win the Oaks in 2014.
While Kenedna was dominant, there were several eye-catching runs in the Schweppervescence from an Oaks point of view, with an extra 200 metres to cover.
Punters should consider the Chris Bieg-trained, Jamie Kah-piloted With a Bit of Dash, the Lindsay Park-trained Jason Holder mount Sebring Dream and the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-prepared Sedanzer, who had the services of Daniel Ganderton.
Earlier, Weir and Allen brought up the first leg of their double when Broadway And First took out the benchmark 82 Darley Goodwood 20th May Handicap (1200m).
Broadway And First ($5.50) came from midfield to take his record to 20 starts for six wins.
Kennewell eyes rich Classic
Local trainer Lloyd Kennewell also has his sights set on Group 1 glory in May after Viddora took out the Group 3 Hughes Chauffeured Limousines R.N. Irwin Stakes (1100m) at the Morphettville meeting.
Viddora ($3.50) was having her second start after a spell and was ridden by West Australian hoop Chris Parnham, who had the mare well placed throughout.
Kennewell will start Viddora next in the Group 1 UBET Classic (Robert Sangster Stakes) over 1200 metres on May 6, the first $1 million race to be run in SA.
Lashes cashes in
Later, Morphettville patrons were treated to another bold front-running display from Territory star Desert Lashes, who joined the black-type club when she took out the listed Projection Graphics Redelva Stakes (1100m).
A $2500 purchase at an Alice Springs sale and trained in the Red Centre by Lisa Lefoe, Desert Lashes ($3.80 favourite) was guided by Todd Pannell and led all the way to extend her perfect record to eight wins from eight starts.
After two convincing wins in Adelaide, the three-year-old Reward for Effort filly has now won $240,000. She too may be among the nominations for the UBET Classic.
Clark’s kicking goals
Congratulations to apprentice Raquel Clark on her win on the promising Beautiful Flyer in last Saturday’s $100,000 Suzie Reynolds Handicap (1200m).
The win of the Len Jarvis-trained Beautiful Flyer was Clark’s third since coming from Tasmania to Adelaide, where she is on a three-month loan to the Macdonald/Gluyas stable.
Her other winners were Dances On Stars at the Oakbank carnival and Boldacious Girl at last week’s Murray Bridge midweeker.
Amy’s almost ready
Sidelined since being injured in a track fall two years ago, Amy Herrmann may return to the saddle at the Mount Gambier Cup carnival next month.
