Wimmera: Bignell kicks on
By Josh Mackay, June 20, 2017 - 9:39 AM

Rupanyup-owned, Warrnambool-trained mare Mrs Bignell made it two wins from three starts this campaign with a narrow but gutsy victory at Donald on Monday.
The Mitch Freedman-trained four-year-old showed good early speed under Luke Currie in the Classic Bet App Store Benchmark 58 Handicap (1350m), and took up a handy position with cover.
The daughter of God’s Own enjoyed a sweet run and was travelling like the winner before the turn.
Once Mrs Bignell ($6.50) got the split in the straight, she showed a nice turn of foot, setting sail after the leaders then grinding down Plus Effronte to score by half a lengths.
Warrior wins well
Stawell trainers Terry and Karina O’Sullivan were also on the winners list at Donald, taking the Mackay’s Leading Edge Jewellers Maiden Plate (1620m) courtesy of Gold Warrior.
The Medaglia D’oro three-year-old, ridden by Jack Hill, scored a dominant win by 2¾ lengths.
Preusker strikes gold
Leading Horsham trainer Paul Preusker notched his third winner for June when Aldo’s Gold scored at Naracoorte last Sunday.
With stable jockey Holly McKechnie aboard in the Bushman’s Arms Hotel Benchmark 64 Handicap (1100m), Aldo’s Gold ($3.70) enjoyed a nice trail off a hot speed.
After a soft run, the Bushranger gelding loomed into contention before the turn, then arrived on the scene quickly with a strong run.
Aldo’s Gold dashed away for a 2½-length win, bringing up a double for McKechnie, who’d been successful earlier on Von Costa Glass ($12) for local trainer Sue Jaensch.
It was almost an even bigger weekend for Preusker, whose last-start Moonee Valley winner Magic Consol was nosed out by Petrology at the Valley the day before.
