Tasmania: Double caps Brunton's big weekend
By Adam Williams, June 21, 2017 - 9:38 AM

The honours were shared around at Hobart last Sunday with trainers Brendan McShane and Scott Brunton and jockeys Bulent Muhcu and David Pires all notching winning doubles.
Brunton was first on the board, taking the day’s opener, an open-age maiden plate over 1100 metres, with the lightly raced Rubinic, who led throughout under Georgie Catania for a simple 1¾-length win.
The leading trainer completed his double with stable newcomer Mansplaining, who took the three-year-old maiden plate over 1200 metres under David Pires at his local debut.
The Myboycharlie gelding had placed at three of his five outings in Victoria and was well found by punters, starting as the $1.60 favourite.
Brunton’s Hobart double followed on from his success at Moonee Valley the day before with one of his stable stars, Lord Da Vinci, who drew clear for a dominant win after sitting outside the speed in a $100,000 open handicap over 1200 metres with Pires in the saddle.
Pires was also successful at Hobart aboard the Julie Richards-trained Manilenya, who scored a strong on-pace win in the open-age maiden plate over 1400 metres.
It was a deserved win for the High Chaparral filly, who had finished runner-up at her first two appearances.
McShane and Muhcu combined for both their wins, kicking off with Appmat, who led throughout to take the benchmark 72 handicap over 2100 metres.
They completed their double with the talented Hugo, who finished strongly from midfield to take the Class 5 handicap over 1400 metres at his second run back from a break.
The six-year-old Magnus gelding has now won six of his 38 appearances and placed on another 18 occasions.
