Tasmania: Carmina caps Craig's consolation double
By Adam Williams, March 22, 2018 - 9:18 AM

It was a night of doubles at Launceston on Wednesday with Craig Newitt, Brendon McCoull and Jason Maskiell each celebrating a pair of wins.
Newitt had to forgo his mount on the Mick Price-trained Oregon’s Day in last week’s Group 1 Coolmore Classic due to illness but was able to get some compensation back home after the mare ran a cracking second.
Newitt opened his account at Launceston with the Scott Brunton-trained Ivoryman, who settled midfield on the rail before working his way into the clear at the top of the straight. The Pins gelding then let down strongly to take the maiden plate over 1400 metres.
Newitt completed his double on Barry Campbell’s lightly raced filly Carmina, who proved too strong after racing outside the leader in the maiden plate over 1200 metres.
Campbell’s charge is bred to be good, being by Wordsmith out of Charlie Goggin’s former talented mare Build a Bridge.
McCoull combined with Longford trainer Bill Ryan for his pair of wins, kicking off with Sentimental Dream, who proved too strong after box-seating in the night’s opener, a benchmark 62 handicap over 1400 metres.
It was the second successive win for the Telesto (USA), gelding who scored at the same track over 1200 metres a fortnight earlier.
McCoull and Ryan completed their double with Osbourne, who also enjoyed a good trail just off the pace before taking the benchmark 58 handicap over 1200 metres at his third run back from a long spell.
Maskiell’s first win came via his grandfather and aunt, Ken and Tanya Hanson, whose charge Lad’s Curfew proved too tough after racing outside leader and short-priced fave Breathtaking.
The in-form hoop completed his double on the Angela Brakey-trained White Hawk, who travelled kindly in midfield before finishing off strongly to take the benchmark 62 handicap over 2100 metres.
Flying the flag
Tasmanians have strong representation interstate this weekend with top sprinter I’m Wesley likely to start one of the favourites in the $200,000 Hareeba Stakes at Mornington while Hobart and Launceston Cup placegetter Fastnet Dragon contests the $300,000 Mornington Cup.
Ex-Launceston hoop Luke Currie will be attempting to be the first Tasmanian to win a Golden Slipper and he looks a top chance to do so on Tony McEvoy’s pre-race favourite Sunlight.
