Tasmania: Treble sends Froggy 23 clear
By Adam Williams, July 18, 2018 - 10:20 AM

Top hoop Craig Newitt extended his insurmountable lead in the Tasmanian jockeys premiership with a treble at Devonport last Sunday.
He kicked off in the day’s opener, a benchmark 84 handicap over 1150 metres, coming from just off the pace aboard the David Miller-trained Underplay.
The Written Tycoon gelding has a great record at his home circuit, having now notched six wins and six minor placings from 16 outings there. A crack at the Devonport Cup may be in the offing this summer.
Newitt later combined with Barry Campbell to guide another Written Tycoon gelding, Scouting Around, to an all-the-way win in the benchmark 64 handicap over 1650 metres.
Campbell’s charge also has a consistent record at his home track, with four of his five wins coming there.
Newitt completed his treble on Bill Ryan’s promising mare Speedonova, who scored a soft first-up win in the benchmark 70 handicap over 1350 metres.
The daughter of Tough Speed has now won four of her eight appearances and a trip across Bass Strait may soon be on the agenda.
Newitt has notched 76 wins for the season, 23 clear of nearest rival Siggy Carr with just two meetings remaining.
Daniel dazzles
Former boom apprentice Daniel Ganderton produced the ride of the day at Devonport to take the open-age maiden plate over 1150 metres aboard the Team Wells-trained Gee Gees Saint Nik.
Ganderton managed to settle the Wordsmith gelding three back on the inside from barrier 11 and only had to go around the tiring leader in the run to the line.
Mandela set for greatness
The Scott Brunton-prepared Mandela Effect stamped himself as a star of the future with a barnstorming win at Caulfield last Saturday.
The lightly raced rising four-year-old Turffontein gelding went back from his outside draw under Dean Holland but showed a great turn of foot to reel his rivals in and win drawing away in the $120,000 three-year-old handicap over 1400 metres.
Brunton’s charge has won three of four outings this prep and was beaten a nose on the other occasion.
