Tasmania: Sprint stars impress in defeat
By Adam Williams, September 19, 2018 - 10:57 AM

Although a win eluded them, talented Tasmanian sprinters Lady Pluck and I’m Wesley lost no admirers with gallant showings in strong races at Flemington last Saturday.
Lady Pluck contested the listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes for fillies over 1100 metres, settling handy before battling on strongly to claim third under Dean Holland.
It was just the third outing for the Scott Brunton-prepared daughter of Pluck, who has notched a soft maiden win and two stakes placings from those three attempts.
The leading trainer is likely to find another stakes race against her own type in Melbourne over the coming weeks for his highly promising charge.
Brunton will again be in Melbourne this weekend, with dual Tasmanian horse of the year Hellova Street taking on the elite in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400 metres. He has drawn ideally in gate four.
The Glenn Stevenson-trained I’m Wesley also acquitted himself well in the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality over 1200 metres, racing on pace under Craig Newitt before fading slightly late to finish fourth, less than a length behind the winner.
The I Am Invincible gelding will also have his next outing in Melbourne, with Stevenson targeting the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington on the October 6.
Saturday scores
It was a good weekend for Glenn Stevenson, who notched his 100th win as a trainer when Exclusive Saturday secured the narrowest of wins under Brendon McCoull in the benchmark 58 handicap over 1350 metres at Devonport last Sunday after tracking the pace throughout.
Newitt shared riding honours with Anthony Darmanin at the Devonport meeting, each securing a winning double.
Newitt opened his account aboard the Barry Campbell-trained Balearic, who took the Class 1 handicap over 1350 metres.
It was a big effort by the former Chris Waller representative, who was having just his second local outing and had to concede both placegetters 8.5kg.
The leading hoop completed his double with the John Blacker-prepared Al Cosmic Gift, who made it successive wins over the Devonport 1150 metres with victory in the Class 2 handicap.
Darmanin kicked off with an all-the-way victory aboard Scouting Around in the benchmark 66 handicap over 1650 metres to provide Campbell with a training double.
The regular fly-in hoop later combined with Alana Fulton to take the benchmark 64 handicap over 1150 metres with Balestrand.
New gig for Siggy
Popular hoop Siggy Carr has recently been granted a dual licence and will have her first representatives as a trainer when Tasmanian racing returns to turf at Hobart on Sunday.
