Wimmera: Dean helps Darren break cup duck
By Josh Mackay, October 23, 2018 - 9:42 AM

An absolute peach of a ride from local jockey Dean Yendall delivered last Sunday’s 2018 Millers Horsham Cup (1800m) to the Darren Weir-trained Another Coldie.
The five-year-old, who started a $4.20 second favourite, landed in the box seat and was travelling like the winner a long way from home.
In the straight, the 60kg impost proved no problem for the son of Snitzel, as he burst clear to score by 3½ lengths.
Remarkably, this was Wimmera-bred Weir’s first success in the Horsham Cup.
Yendall had won the cup once before, in 2009 aboard the Daryl Cannon-trained Burbonstreetblues.
Preusker on fire
Horsham trainer Paul Preusker had a day to remember at his home-town cup meeting, training a winning treble.
He kicked off with first-starter Surprise Baby ($5) in the opening event, a 1200-metre maiden plate.
The son of Shocking showed nice speed under Declan Bates, stalking stablemate Little Robyn then sweeping to the front for a three-quarter-length win.
Preusker later produced up-and-coming staying type Inayforhay ($2.30 favourite) to win the 1400-metre maiden, again with Bates riding.
The Rebel Raider gelding made a sustained run from the tail and proved too strong, saluting by a length and a half.
The Great Artiste completed Preusker’s winning treble with Christine Puls aboard in the benchmark 64 over 1400 metres.
In similar fashion to Inayforhay, The Great Artiste was ridden patiently before winding up from the tail.
The Atomic five-year-old struck the front in the shadows of the post, scoring narrowly.
Preusker also managed four minor placings on the day, in a mighty training effort.
McCool claims cup
Stawell trainer Dane Smith produced ex-OTI Racing entire Finn McCool in fine fettle to claim last Saturday’s Avoca Cup (1860m), with ex-Wimmera apprentice Jess Eaton in the saddle.
Daring tactics saw Finn McCool ($31) inject some speed into the race, and the Irish import proved too good around the tight track, winning by a length.
Finn McCool does boast a stakes placing behind Homesman at the Curragh in Ireland last year, suggesting he has his fair share of ability, and should prove competitive in the coming Wimmera cups.
