Todd Pannell and Jake Toeroek kept their chances alive of taking out this season’s jockeys’ premiership with a double apiece on the Parks track at Morphettville last Saturday.
Pannell is now fourth on the table with 25 winners, Toeroek fifth on 22. Leader Jamie Kah, now based in Victoria, has 37 while second-placed Raquel Clark is on 36.
Pannell landed the first leg of his double in the 1250-metre maiden on three-year-old first-starter Aiguilette ($4), trained at Strathalbyn by John Macmillan.
Pannell later scored on Will Clarken-trained $2.60 favourite Diapason in a benchmark 70 over 1400 metres.
Pannell was again in the winner’s circle on Sunday when the Darryl Carrison-trained Bramfield ($3.20 favourite) charged home up the centre of track to win the Kimba Cup (1960m), sixth heat of the Bill Holland Series, at the final meeting for the season at Port Lincoln.
Toeroek landed the first leg of his Morphettville Parks double when Havana Heat ($6.50) won the benchmark 70 over 1400 metres, giving Will Clarken the first leg of a running double.
Riding for the local stable of Wally Bencic, Toeroek completed his double on By The Pound ($4.80), who settled well and maintained a good position in winning the benchmark 64 over 1250 metres.
Toeroek made it three wins for the weekend when he joined forces with Jackie Stoetzer in the win of Tolstoy ($2.30 favourite) in the 1210-metre flying handicap at Port Lincoln.
Raquel Clark was the leading rider at the Port Lincoln meeting with a treble, winning on Ruby’s Reward ($1.90 favourite), Oblique Line ($4.40) and Call Me Herbie ($2.70 favourite).
Call Me Herbie was Clark’s 99th winner for the season. She notched her 100th on Wednesday on $2.60 favourite Dream Kisses in the TAB National Apprentices Series race at Doomben.
Bala brace for Barend
Trainer Tony McEvoy and jockey Barend Vorster shared the honours at the Balaklava meeting on Wednesday when they landed a popular double with Classic Weiwei ($2.50 favourite) and Lady Young ($3.20 favourite).
