Goldfields: Bargain buy Brother gets the bob in
By Ben Sporle, March 20, 2019 - 6:40 AM

A thrilling finish at Yarra Valley last Sunday went the way Shaun Dwyer would have wanted when Brother Paul broke out of maiden grade in a blanket finish.
The fifth horse home was only three-quarters of a length from the winner, who was sent out a $5 chance at his sixth start.
Fourth up from a spell, the son of Globetrotter had a box-seat run in the small field and hit the lead just in the nick of time under Joe Bowditch.
“He’s taken a while to mature and is a bit small,” said Bendigo-based Dwyer.
“He won a trial early on at Tatura and we had him sold to Singapore but he was only 15.2 hands so it fell through.”
The win was Bowditch’s first for Dwyer in Victoria but they combined for a number of winners when both were based in Queensland.
Brother Paul cost just $5000 as a yearling.
Speedster’s all set
Joe Bowditch and Shaun Dwyer will team up again at Mornington this Saturday as the “Bendigo Bullet”, Miss Leonidas, returns in the 1000-metre benchmark 78.
Dwyer’s mare has won three of her nine starts, the highlight a six-length triumph at The Valley in June, and a recent exhibition gallop at Bendigo between races has her ready for her return.
Miss Leonidas Bendigo’s three-year-old of the year last season.
Brothers impress
Bendigo trainer Brett Charry is building his jumps team for the coming season and took half-brothers Mr Coyne and Grassini to Warrnambool for educational trials on Monday.
Grassini, a two-time winner over hurdles, was narrowly beaten by Bit of a Lad in the first jumps race of 2019 at Warrnambool last week.
He took to the bigger fences with aplomb on Monday, winning his steeplechase trial by 25 lengths.
Four years his junior is half-brother Mr Coyne, a three-time placegetter over hurdles.
He returned with a four-length trial win under Braidon Small.
