Tasmania: Deroche dominant as curtain falls on turf

With the Hobart track being refurbished, the TTC conducted the final Tasmanian meeting on turf this season last Sunday and star filly Deroche improved her already impressive record with a dominant win in the day’s feature, the $50,000 Armidale Stud Tasbred 2YO over 1220 metres.
The Barry Campbell-trained daughter of Needs Further jumped straight to the front under Craig Newitt and was never seriously challenged, cruising to a comfortable four-length win.
Deroche has won four of her six starts and placed on the other two occasions. She will now head to the paddock to be targeted at the state’s feature three-year-old races next season.
Campbell went on to complete a running double with Axion scoring a strong on-pace win under Ismail Toker in the benchmark 64 handicap over 1420 metres.
Deroche’s victory was also the first leg of a double for Newitt, who later took the benchmark 72 handicap over 1120 metres upon the Scott Brunton-prepared Street Tough.
The win gave Brunton bookends at the meeting as he’d earlier taken the open-age maiden plate over 1220 metres with With No Name, who scored impressively first up from a break under Troy Baker.
Bill Ryan’s smart middle-distance galloper Speed Force completed a hat-trick of wins in the $20,000 open handicap over 2150 metres under Brendon McCoull.
The Tough Speed gelding enjoyed a comfortable trail just off the pace before scoring a soft two-length victory despite giving all of his rivals at least 6kg.
The other feature on the program, a $20,000 open handicap over 1420 metres went to the Wayne Curran-trained The Master Speed, who proved too strong after racing on pace throughout under four-kilo claimer Peter Lui.
The win was Lui’s first and came at his 13th race ride.
His claim proved invaluable with his mount carrying just 50kg — 4kg less than the runner-up and race favourite Speedonova.
