Tasmania: Campbell cops three, trains three
By Adam Williams, June 19, 2019 - 11:09 AM

Leading trainer Barry Campbell made the most of a stay of proceedings by preparing three winners from his five runners at Devonport last Sunday.
Campbell was suspended by South Australian stewards for three years last Friday for administering raceday treatment to his star stayer Eastender on the morning of the Adelaide Cup. He was granted a seven-day stay, which allowed his runners to start at the Devonport meeting.
Craig Newitt, who was in red-hot form with four winners on the seven-race card, rode Campbell’s first two victors, kicking off with Newhart ($2.80 favourite), who came from just off the pace to take the first division of the benchmark 64 handicap over 1350 metres.
The highly promising Fighting Sun gelding has now won three of his four appearances and was game in defeat on the other occasion.
Campbell and Newitt also combined to take the second division of the benchmark 64 handicap over 1350 metres with Breathtaking ($4.80), who prevailed by the narrowest of margins after also racing handy.
Anthony Darmanin was aboard Campbell’s final winner, Sanction King ($13), who came from midfield for a dominant 3¾-length win in the Class 1 over 1350 metres.
Earlier Newitt was successful on the Terry Evans-trained Smooth Pebbles ($2.90 favourite), who made it back-to-back wins at the track with victory in the maiden/Class 1 plate over 1650 metres.
The leading hoop later combined with Team Wells to take the open-age maiden plate over 1150 metres with ex-Victorian gelding Varekai ($4).
It was a big weekend for Newitt, as he’d won on the Chris Waller-trained Mawaany Machine at Ladbrokes Park on the Saturday.
Newitt has now notched 90 wins in Tasmania this season and with six meetings remaining looks set to become the third jockey to crack the ton.
The first hoop to achieve the feat was Beverley Buckingham, while Brendon McCoull has ridden 100-plus winners in a season twice.
