Wimmera: Simon on a roll with Rock
By Josh Mackay, July 17, 2019 - 6:13 AM

Horsham trainer Simon Gebert extended his recent purple patch with the win of stable newcomer Rocktheblock at Murtoa on Monday.
Contesting a benchmark 58 over 1200 metres with Christine Puls in the saddle, Rocktheblock ($4.40 favourite) showed speed leaving the barriers, camping right on the leader’s hammer.
From there, the son of low-profile stallion Rockaroundtheclock kept out of trouble, getting a charmed run in the heavy conditions.
Once balanced for the run home, Rocktheblock and Crash Cranach came away from the rest of the field and fought out a battle royal, Rocktheblock gaining the ascendancy to score by a neck.
The win was the four-year-olds second in 20 starts, and his first for the Gebert yard since transferring from John Rowe, who remains in the ownership.
The day prior at Mt Gambier, Gebert’s consistent mare Ze Ze Ulater made it two wins on the trot this campaign, relishing the heavy track conditions in scoring a comfortable benchmark 60 win over 1400 metres under Kayla Crowther.
Monday’s winner was Gebert’s fourth from nine runners since June 15.
Eudora, you beauty
Telopea Downs trainer Darryl Dodson also found the winner’s circle at Murtoa, courtesy of the enigmatic mare Eudora.
The Purrealist four-year-old lined up in a benchmark 58 event over 2050 metres, with Dean Holland riding.
After an economical midfield run, Eudora got clear running in the straight and finished powerfully for a comfortable 2½-length win.
The mare was coming off unplaced runs at Edenhope and Casterton, but this was her first run on heavy ground. Apparently the win didn’t surprise everyone, as she was backed from $15 into $11.
Eudora’s record now stands at 16 starts for two wins, two minor placings and $30,085.
