SA: Colt springs surprise on Guineas trail
By Peter Neall, August 20, 2019 - 9:34 AM

Morphettville co-trainers Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas look to have a genuine spring prospect in Dalasan, impressive winner of last Saturday’s Group 3 Spring Stakes over 1200 metres at his home track.
The three-year-old Dalakhani colt was well placed throughout under reigning Adelaide premiership hoop Raquel Clark and prevailed by a length from the Lindsey Smith-trained Group 1 winner Scales of Justice, with the winner's stablemate Waging War a further length away third.
Punters had seen the race as a match between Scales of Justice, a $1.75 favourite off his first-up Bletchingly Stakes win, and the Tony McEvoy-trained Despatch ($2.70), who finished fourth.
Dalasan was sent out a generous $13 chance despite a seven-kilo pull under the weight-for-age scale and an excellent juvenile record — three starts for two wins and a narrow second in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes.
Dalasan will likely start next in the listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville on Saturday week on his way to the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 12.
A couple more for Cartwright
Apprentice Georgina Cartwright maintained her position at the top of the city jockeys table with a running double last Saturday.
Riding for local trainer Travis Doudle, Cartwright landed her first winner when Jaguary ($2.40 favourite) led all the way in the 2028 metre benchmark 75 handicap, the ex-Kiwi four-year-old’s second successive win.
Riding for another local trainer in Leah Conlon, Cartwright brought up her second winner when Vieira ($11) came from midfield to take out the benchmark 75 handicap over 1200 metres.
Barend Vorster shared the honours with Cartwright, riding two winners for his main employer, Tony McEvoy.
Their first winner, Aten ($3.40), led all the way first up in the three-year-old maiden plate over 1100 metres.
McEvoy and Vorster were back in the winner’s circle after Shop Til I Drop ($8) won an 1800-metre benchmark 64.
Quorn is good for you
The Flinders Ranges come alive this Saturday with the Quorn Jockey Club staging its once-a-year non-TAB fixture, featuring the Oz Minerals Carrapateena Quorn Cup (1800m), fifth leg of the Outback Cup Series.
Always a social highlight in the region, Quorn Cup day features a Fashion at the Races qualifying event worth $500 in cash plus prizes.
Racing returns to the south east of the state on Sunday when the Bordertown Racing Club stages a meeting.

Spoils worth the wait
Murray Bridge trainer John Hickmott and jockey Sairyn Fawke know how to land a longshot, as they proved again at Gawler on Wednesday when the six-year-old first-starter Vicky Spoils ($51) defied a three-wide run to chase down another first-starter, the Grant Young-trained $2.80 favourite Exalted Hands, in a 1200-metre maiden.
It was the second winner of the new season for the Hickmott/Fawke combination, who combined for 35 winners in 2018/19.
Among their winners last season was Right And Ready, who scored at $81 at Morphettville and $151 at Murray Bridge.
Also at Gawler, Victorian trainer Eric Musgrove kept up his dominance of the SA jumps scene when the Lee Horner-ridden Romelo ($2.05 favourite) won the 3380-metre hurdle.
Musgrove trained all three horses to finish in the four-horse field.
A further highlight of Wednesday’s meeting were the post-race interviews conducted on Rcing.com by hoops Raquel Clark and Dom Tourneur in the lead-up to the coming National Jockeys Trust race day.
