Central Victoria: Gem lacks gears but honesty pays
By Paul Egan, August 20, 2019 - 10:33 AM

Kyneton trainer Sue Naylor saddled up Paris Gem ($3.70) for the mare’s first win at her start number 20 on the Sportsbet-Ballarat synthetic on Monday.
The Von Costa De Hero five-year-old was a comfortable winner of the Pipe Pro Directional Drilling F&M Maiden Plate (1400m).
Ridden by Declan Bates, the mare defeated $2.05 favourite Johandough by three-quarters of a length with Khanion Bay ($5.50) a further 2½ lengths away.
“She’s honest but she’s limited and she’s gone around enough times. Today it was her lucky day,” Naylor said after the race.
“She’s just kept doing enough to keep getting a feed in the stable.
“She’s very easy. She’s only a pony and she does everything right but she just need a few more gears,” she said.
Naylor purchased Paris Gem at the 2015 Inglis Great Southern weanling sale for the bargain price of $900 for herself and John Fowler.
The mare had two minor placings prior to her win, with four fourths building her stakemoney to $38,545.
Diamonds a pearler
Seymour trainer Peter Sullivan had Diamondsandcowboys ($2.90 favourite) cherry ripe for a first-up win at Wangaratta last Saturday.
The lightly raced seven-year-old King of Prussia mare was a narrow but impressive winner of the Wangaratta Bearings 0-58 Handicap (1100m).
The mare, ridden by Daniel Stackhouse, defeated Canny Roll ($6.50) by a half-head with Atunnah Courage ($5.50) third.
For Sullivan, who has only a small team, the win was his second in as many starters.
He was successful with Stratisfree on the same track in June.
Diamondsandcowboys, owned by the Sullivan family, has now won two races with three minor placings from her 11 starts.
Robbo breaks through
Well done to young Kyneton trainer Jarrod Robinson, who saddled up his first ever city winner with Mean Mister ($17) at Ladbrokes Park last week.
The modest horseman’s achievement went unnoticed by the press.
This preparation, the ultra-consistent gelding has won four races with four minor placings from his 10 starts.
Seymour sets sail
Good luck to CEO Penny Reeve and all at Seymour Racing Club on the success of their Ladies’ Day this Saturday.
The club has been dogged with bad luck, losing several meetings over the last couple of months.
Saturday’s meeting will be a pipe-opener for the club’s Bet365 Seymour Cup card on Sunday October 20.
