SA: Rocca on a roll
By Peter Neall, September 17, 2019 - 9:18 AM

Goolwa trainer David Jolly looks to be in for quite a spring after unbeaten three-year-old Roccabascerana won his third race at Morphettville last Saturday.
Giving Todd Pannell the first leg of an early double, Roccabascerana ($1.50 favourite) led all the way to beat fellow benchmark 70 three-year-olds over 1200 metres.
Roccabascerana adds to Jolly’s Melbourne carnival arsenal, which already includes last-start Penny Edition Stakes winner Behemoth.
Pannell landed the second leg of his double when last-start Sandown Hillside winner Quaffany ($2.25 favourite) ran on from midfield to take the benchmark 80 over 2600 metres.
Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, the cleverly named son of Zoffany and Margaret River has found his niche over longer trips. He’s now won four races in a row over 2000 metres and up, taking his overall record to 14 starts for five wins and $115,420.
Filly flies
Roccabascerana wasn’t the only potential Melbourne carnival three-year-old on show at Morphettville, with Victorian filly Bonvicini ($8) powering home from midfield to win the listed Morphettville Guineas (1600m).
The Myboycharlie filly, trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, was having only her third start, and her first in black-type company. She was ridden by Jake Toeroek.
Caulfield next for Aiguilette
Strathalbyn trainer John Macmillan was well pleased with the win of $2.60 favourite Aiguilette in the benchmark 70 National Jockeys Trust Series Final (1200m).
Piloted by Kayla Crowther, Aiguilette came with a powerful inside run to grab Tongsai Boss on the line.
Macmillan says the four-year-old gelding, who’s won four of his six starts, is likely to head to Melbourne for a benchmark 78 at Caulfield on September 29, with the in-form Jamie Kah likely to ride.
Twin doubles
Apprentice Gary Lo and senior rider Justin Potter were the stars of last Sunday’s Mount Gambier fixture with a double apiece.
Lo had successive winners — Bear Arms and Longmire. Potter scored on Just Chipping Away and Elna.
Brett gets the gig
Hong Kong race caller Brett Davis will be the new voice of SA racing from December. Davis, who started his radio career in Adelaide, has also had stints in Tasmania and Singapore.
