SA: Shorties see McEvoys kick clear

Angaston-based father-son training partners Tony and Calvin McEvoy further strengthened their grip on the Adelaide premiership with a treble on the Parks track at Morphettville last Saturday.
The three wins took the McEvoys’ seasonal tally to 20, nine ahead of second-placed Phillip Stokes.
Last Saturday’s first Kildalton Park winner came when Todd Pannell guided The Pugilist ($1.90 favourite) to an on-pace victory in the 1400-metre three-year-old maiden plate.
The win came as a relief to the stable after the $120,000 yearling buy had fallen short of high expectations in his first campaign, as a late two-year-old.
The McEvoys’ later winners were both ridden by the stable’s retained senior jockey, Barend Vorster.
The first of them was The Natural ($1.75 favourite), who led all the way first up in the 1250-metre three-year-old maiden.
The stable’s third winner was Jentico ($5.50), who led most of the way in the $100,000 Happy Trails Series Final (1400m).
A couple for Kayla
Apprentice Kayla Crowther (25.9%) is second only to Vorster (26.5%) in strike-rate terms among the top 10 Adelaide jockeys this season, and she kept up the good work with a double from five rides last Saturday.
Teaming with Ballarat trainer Matt Cumani, Crowther landed her first winner when Crafty Devil ($5.50) came from last on the home turn to bring up her 10th success from 51 starts in a benchmark 75 over 2250 metres.
Crowther completed her double when Raging Queen ($3.30) took out the benchmark 66 handicap (1400m) for her master, Phillip Stokes.
River floods home
The Caulfield stable of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace took the first two-year-old race for the season in SA when Flinders River won last Saturday’s 1000-metre maiden for the juveniles.
With Paul Gatt aboard, the Fighting Sun colt came from well back with a strong run over the concluding stages.
Flinders River’s price ($5.50) seemed generous for a first-starter in Adelaide from the Maher/Eustace camp, but runners trained by Lindsay Park and Gordon Richards were preferred by punters in the seven-horse field.
Stubby stars
Jason Holder was the standout rider at Penola’s Sunday meeting with a double. His winners, both prepared by Mount Gambier trainer Richard Wilson, were Please Rise and Mista Holyfield.
