SA: Goddess looks good for Oaks
By Peter Neall, April 19, 2021 - 7:22 PM

Although he only rode one winner at Morphettville last Saturday, the meeting will live long in the memory of Victorian apprentice Thomas Stockdale as it provided his first group win — on Tyche Goddess in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m).
Starting friendless at $41 and well ridden by Stockdale for Cranbourne co-trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, the filly came with a strong run from midfield to land her first success at stakes level.
The way Tyche Goddess won she would not look out of place in next Saturday’s Group 1 Schweppes (Australasian) Oaks over 2000 metres if Busuttin and Young choose to go that way.
Treble joy for Jye
Reigning Melbourne Cup winner Jye McNeil took the riding honours at Morphettville last Saturday when he landed a treble.
McNeil opened his account when first-starter Generation ($2.90 favourite) won a 1050-metre two-year-olds’ benchmark 64 for Caulfield’s Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.
The threesome of McNeil, Maher and Eustace landed their second winner when Muntaseera won the listed Redelva Stakes over 1100 metres.
Starting the $3.80 punters’ choice, Muntaseera powered home from well back to beat the roughie Smokin’ Val by a long neck.
McNeil finished off a productive day when he steered Deep Dive ($3 favourite) to victory in a benchmark 78 over 1200 metres.
The four-year-old Deep Field gelding, prepared at Anthony and Sam Freedman’s Flemington stable and coming off a Pakenham win, led all the way.
Jollys eye Goodwood
Father-daughter co-trainers Richard and Chantelle Jolly had big smiles after the victory of their star sprinter Kemalpasa in the Group 3 R.N. Irwin Stakes over 1100 metres at Morphettville.
Unraced since finishing third in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield in February, Kemalpasa ($3.10 favourite) led all the way under Jake Toeroek and is likely to tackle the Group 3 D.C. McKay Stakes over 1100 metres on Saturday week before a possible start in the Group 1 Goodwood (1200m) on May 15.
SA looks to have its strongest chance in years of winning the state’s major sprint, with Kemalpasa, Gytrash and Behemoth likely Goodwood starters.
Speaking of Behemoth, patrons at last Sunday’s Strathalbyn meeting had a treat when he galloped between races. Trainer David Jolly pronounced himself happy with the work.
Two for Todd
Todd Pannell was another jockey to shine at Morphettville last Saturday, landing a running double on Echo Boomer ($3) for Ryan Balfour in the benchmark 60 over 1600 metres and Surreal Image ($9) for Cranbourne trainer Kevin Corstens in a benchmark 82 over the same trip.
Teaming with Will Clarken, Pannell scored his third success for the weekend when Wide Awake ($4.60) won a three-year-olds’ Class 1 over 1100 metres at Strathalbyn last Sunday.
The first leg of Balfour’s Morphettville double came when Karl Zechner guided Canford ($5.50) to victory in a benchmark 78 over 2500 metres.

Double pleases punters
Trainer David Jolly and jockey Kayla Crowther did best at Murray Bridge on Wednesday, combining for a popular double. Their first winner came up when Valuable Witness ($2.30 favourite) won a 1000-metre maiden plate while their second was Gaze Grise ($2.40 favourite) in the benchmark 54 handicap over the same trip.
