Goldfields: Sona stoked as Draiochta digs deep
By Lachlan Chapman, May 11, 2021 - 2:54 PM

It was a long time between drinks for Brent Stanley’s Draiochta, but he scored his first win in Australia with an all-the-way effort over 1620 metres in 0-58 company at Donald last Sunday.
It had been 1103 days since the ex-Kiwi won his maiden at Matamata back in May 2018.
The win was a great result for Kevin Pitstock’s Sona Bloodstock, loyal supporters of Stanley’s Sutton Grange stable who have had much success with ex-New Zealand gallopers.
A horse described by Stanley as “his own worst enemy at times”, the Per Incanto gelding was ridden with intent early by Craig Robertson to find the lead. He was travelling strongly on the home turn and showed great fight to hold off the challengers late.
The win takes the gelding’s record to two wins and six minor placings from 19 starts.
Following that confidence-booster, his connections will be trusting they won’t have to wait as long for his next win.
Follow these
A massive set of 18 jumpouts was conducted at Bendigo on Tuesday morning. Following are three runners that look to be worth following when they begin their race campaigns.
• Just Folk (Josh Julius): Imposing galloper who hit the line strongly in heat two. Scored a win at Sandown at the end of his last preparation and looks likely to measure up to metropolitan grade again this preparation. Has plenty of upside, having had just seven starts for three wins.
• El Salto (Brent Stanley): Placed at Flemington last campaign and was last seen in Group 2 company. Looked in good order winning a strong heat featuring recent city winner Our Lone Star.
• Bill the Bee (Kym Hann): Just touched off in the heat won by El Salto but travelled strongly on the bit the whole way. Look for him first up as he seems to have come back well this campaign.
Back to Bendigo
Racing returns to the Nursery of Champions this Sunday for an eight-race program. Local trainers have strong representation across the card and will be looking to extend the good run Bendigo gallopers have been having on their home deck.
